WHAT ARE COOKIES?
Cookies are small text files transmitted by a site to visitors and then returned to the site where they are read by the server. They make it possible to collect information on how visitors are using a given website (which and how many pages viewed, time spent on site, channel from which user arrived on the site, etc.). This information is stored on the computer or any other device used to access the Internet.
Cookies allow use or operation of the site or some of its features. Basically, they make it possible to: save preferences (language, font size, color, etc.), dispensing with the need to re-enter the same information multiple times during each visit (e.g. login data) or manage a shopping cart on e-commerce sites, analyze use of services and contents offered by the site, view contents such as videos, maps, etc. They also allow site contents to be shared on social media, display of ads tailored to individual user preferences to make more effective advertising campaigns.
COOKIES CAN BE OF DIFFERENT TYPES
TECHNICAL COOKIES. Technical cookies allow certain sections of the site to function correctly. There are 2 categories based on duration:
- temporary (or session) cookies have no expiry date and are deleted at the end of the session or when the user's browser is closed.
- persistent cookies have a predefined expiry date so they remain on the user’s PC also after the session has ended or the browser is closed, so they can be read by the site at the time of the next visit.
These cookies are needed to view the site correctly and will therefore always be used and sent, unless the user changes his/her browser settings (with the risk of blocking certain site functions).
ANALYTIC COOKIES. Cookies in this category are used to collect information in aggregate and anonymous form concerning the user’s interaction with the site, in order to improve the site functions and contents. These cookies are classed as technical cookies if they are installed by the site operator rather than a third party.
If analytic cookies are installed on the user's terminal by a site other than the one the user is visiting then they are classed as THIRD-PARTY COOKIES, e.g. GOOGLE ANALYTICS cookies.
The expression THIRD-PARTY COOKIES refers not only to analytic cookies but also cookies used to run software such as social media share buttons or other software, including video or map implementation software.
PROFILING COOKIES. These cookies are required to create user profiles in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user on the site pages.
