Due to its great rigidity and self-extinguishing capability, this material is used for ventilation ducts and vapor and gas conveyance. It is slowly replacing PVC also for more common applications, since it releases no toxic gases in case of fire. It is very resistant mechanically, since its basic material is a PPS - self-extinguishing polypropylene homopolymer -, but is very shock sensitive at low temperatures and, as a thermoplastic, is not resistant to UV rays.
PPS - Self-extinguishing Polypropylene - is light grey in color, specifically RAL 7037 and is used for the pipes and fittings of the Hürner Italia S.r.l. ventilation line.
The fire resistance rating of PPS is B1 according to DIN 4102 standard and V-2 according to UL 94 standard.
Contrary to PVC, in fact, in case of fire PPS does not release hydrogen chloride, which is well known as very toxic. Mechanical resistance is very high, since the basic material is a homopolymer, but has the same restrictions as materials not resistant to UV rays.
The Hürner Italia S.r.l. PPS program includes molded and thermoformed fittings from OD 50 mm to OD 1000 mm in all standard shapes and extruded pipes up to OD 1200 mm. Fittings exceeding OD 1000 mm are made for ventilation lines from segmented pipes.
